Alexander O'Neal
Who is he? Mississippi-born r’n’b/ soul singer, now 58.
What is he famous for? He has had a string of hits throughout a career spanning almost 30 years, including If You Were Here Tonight, Fake and Criticize.
Distinguishing features? He’s a big man with a big voice, and a bit of a smoothy, too.
Career high? Alexander’s debut album, back in 1985, featured three top 20 singles while his second, Hearsay, produced a further three. Subsequent albums, including two greatest hits compilations, have been received with varying success, but he remains a sought-after live performer.
Career low? Probably allowing himself to get involved in British reality TV. In 2008, he took part in a Wife Swap UK special, swapping his wife, Cynthia, with broadcaster and TV wine expert Jilly Goolden.
Significant others? Alexander is still married to Cynthia.
Not to be confused with? Barry White or Luther Vandross, both now sadly playing the great soul gig in the sky.
He says? “The main reason I think the British fans have kept coming to my shows for over 20 years is my consistency. When they come to see me, they know they’re gonna get my heart and soul.”
Interesting fact? He began his career in his 20s with a band called Flyte Time. Later signed by Prince to the Warner Bros label with their name changed to The Time, a disagreement with Prince led to Alexander leaving the band and being replaced as lead singer.
ALEXANDER O’NEAL and very special guests play The Green Room, on Duke Street, on Friday, January 27. Tickets are £25. Box office: 0870 787 1866.
