Desperate Scousewives the play returns to St Helens Theatre Royal

THE original Desperate Scousewives are returning to the stage for a four-night run at St Helens Theatre Royal.

The stage show came before, and is completely unconnected to the “dramality” TV series, but keeps getting confused for it.

Co-writer, director and cast member Lynne Fitzgerald explains: “During the recent run of Night Collar, at St Helens, I was promoting our show, Desperate Scousewives the play, and all the audience were saying ‘Oh no, we won’t be coming to see that, we’ve seen it on the telly’.

“I spent over an hour explaining to people that the play is nothing to do with the TV series.”

Having the same name was always going to be a challenge, of course, and co-writer Clare Bowles reveals producers of the TV show originally tried to get them to change the play’s title.

“That was early September, but we wouldn’t back down,” she says.

The theatre show, which also stars Philippa Goodwin and Lynn Francis, was performed at Liverpool Actors Studio last October.

It revolves around four women facing up to the hardships life has thrown at them with a traditional blend of good humour and abrasive Liverpool wit.

DESPERATE SCOUSEWIVES is at St Helens Theatre Royal, from January 25-28.
