James L Talbot, researcher at Liverpool John Moores University and author of horror novel The Dark Place under the spotlight
Tell us a bit about your job I produce reports, evaluations and commissioned research associated with alcohol and drug use in the North West of England.
What inspires you? I love music, books and films that have the power to move and surprise me. The lyrics and story construction in the songs of Jimmy Webb and Ryan Adams are wonderful. I especially like horror films made by the Hammer studios from the 50s, 60s and 70s but I also like the films of Rob Zombie, Eli Roth and Robert Rodriguez.
When were you last moved by culture? The closing ceremony of the Olympics showed how music can be absorbed into society and become part of its identity.
What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months? I went to The Hay Festival of Literature a couple of years ago where I saw Christy Moore in concert and met radio legend Bob Harris. I plan to go back either this year or next.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? I’d like to buy a small holding in the republic of Ireland where I’d be able to devote my time to writing and my other hidden talent.
What makes you laugh? Watching The Simpsons, It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen Homer Simpson fail spectacularly I still laugh
What gets you angry? People who take no part in the political process and then complain about the Government.
What’s your hidden talent? Growing chillies.
