Legendary New York Dolls guitarist Steve Conte tells Jade Wright about his love of Liverpool
STEVE CONTE is best known as the guitarist with New York Dolls but has also played with Willy DeVille, Michael Monroe and Paul Simon.
Working between records and tours as the lead guitarist and backing singer with The Michael Monroe Band, Steve records and tours with his band The Crazy Truth, which comes to Eric's on Wednesday April 10.
“I am so excited to finally play Liverpool,” says the New Yorker, 67.
“I played the Carling (now 02) Academy a few years back with New York Dolls but this will be the first time playing my own music here.
“Needless to say there has always been something so magical about the city of Liverpool for me. Of course because it was the breeding ground for those four lads – John, Paul, George and Ringo – who made me want to pick up a guitar and write songs.
“On this tour I’ll be doing some New York City style rock ‘n’ roll played by a guy who cut his teeth on British bands.”
As well as the gig itself, Steve says he’s looking forward to being in Liverpool.
“Last time I was in town I went to the Cavern Club (which I know is not in the original location anymore) and I bought some killer boots at a shop that I hope is still around the corner.
“I haven’t seen enough of the sights – Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, Menlove Ave and the Beatles museums are all on my list.
“Last time it was pretty much a gig, a hotel, a restaurant and a few shops. But this time around, let's give me something to talk about afterwards.”
