Liverpool’s John Moores Prize paintings up for auction

CONTEMPORARY paintings selected as exhibits in Liverpool’s prestigious John Moores Prize are going under the hammer.

The works by some of Britain’s most exciting artists who exhibited through the competition during the late 1990s are being sold at auction in London.

They are expected to be sold for thousands of pounds.

Among those for sale are the works of top names Maureen Paley, Alan Cristea and Martin McGinn, whose Chandelier II is expected to fetch up to £1,200.

Other outstanding lots include Kate Donachie’s Tent, estimated to fetch £600-£800 and Alex Landrum’s Perfect Accident No 5, estimate at between £800-£1,200, alongside works by Roger Kelly, Alan Brooks, Sybille Berger and Sue Arrowsmith.

Founded by John Moores of Littlewoods, the first John Moores prize in 1957 was always intended as a one-off.

But its great success led to it becoming a biennial event.
