LIVERPOOL’S Walker Art gallery is in the running for a £60,000 prize, after being shortlisted for a national award.
It was nominated for the Contemporary Art Society Annual Award 2011.
The money would bring a proposal by Egyptian artist Wael Shawky to life, with his work then displayed within the gallery’s permanent collection.
The museum, on William Brown Street, joins four other attractions – National Museum Wales, the University of Warwick Art Collection, Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery and Shipley Art Gallery – on the shortlist.
The award was set up three years ago to support UK museums which commission new work.
The winner will be announced on November 14 at a ceremony at the German Gymnasium, London.
Shawky is acclaimed for his work as an artist and film-maker.
He has exhibited internationally at the Venice and Istanbul biennials.
