Prints by abstract artist John Hoyland go on show at 3345 Parr Street for Liverpool Independents Biennial

Life and Love by John Hoyland

AN EXHIBITION by the man dubbed “Britain’s answer to Mark Rothko” has opened at 3345 Parr Street.

The show features new prints by Royal Academy member John Hoyland, who is one of the best-known abstract artists in the UK.

Born in Sheffield in 1934, he attended the Sheffield School of Art before studying at London’s Royal Academy from 1957.

After his first solo show was held at the Marlborough New London Gallery in 1964, he moved to New York, where abstract impressionism was at its height.

His work is held by more than 30 major public collections around the world including the Tate Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Hoyland was a prizewinner in the John Moores Painting Prize, held at Liverpool’s Walker Art gallery, in 1964 and won first prize in 1982.

The showcase of his work at 3345 forms part of a wider exhibition, Abstract Amigos, held for the Independents Biennial by Editions and CCA Galleries. Work by Herefordshire-based artist and illustrator Terry Sullivan will be on show from October 20 to November 14 and that of Mexican painter David Lach from November 17 to December 5.

The exhibition opened earlier this month with pieces by Derek Culley.

JOHN HOYLAND’S work is at 3345 Parr Street, Liverpool, until October 17.
