Fashion gallery: Hobbs goes back to the floral forties this season

Hobbs harks back to its British heritage this season. Emma Johnson learns more

FEMININE and pretty does not begin to cover the new season NW3 collection from Hobbs.

Taking its cue from its quintessential British style, the range’s summer prints recall 50s crockery and upholstery with pixilated checks, bird patterns, silk paisleys and florals.

There’s the classic tailoring you would expect from the brand, but it gets a mod twist. A cropped crombie blazer is teamed with a blackcurrant skinny-rib and tapered wool trousers and finished with mannish red bro gues for a colourful yet ladylike look.

There are shades of post-war era chic in the use of artfully crumpled linen in buttercup and slate on 40s style blazers and shorts and romper suits in pomegranate while doves are referenced throughout the collection appearing as trompe l’oeil motifs on the necklines of girly sweaters and in a delicate navy and raspberry printed chiffon.

And, in a nod to the make-do and mend trend, crochet makes a starring appearance in burned orange cardigans and a stand out dress in rich butterscotch. On the accessories front, it goes from buttercup-coloured mini barrel bags to raspberry snake embossed loafers and cute hats and hairpieces give a delicate retro finish to the looks. If a crochet effect trilby is not for you, then perhaps a soft bow hairband will be.
