Mass exodus starts at JLA

LIVERPOOL fans started their mass exodus to Athens today.

Hundreds of supporters, as well as the Reds’ players and club officials, arrived at John Lennon airport for the first of 57 flights to the Greek capital.

Many travellers were wielding flags, banners and sombreros.

The John Lennon statue at the airport joined in the atmosphere, decked out in a hat and scarf.

Officials were preparing for the busiest 48 hours in JLA’s history, with more than 13,500 Liverpool fans flying out over the next three days.

The first Boeing 747 jumbo jet took off at 9.30am carrying 580 fans. The plane transporting Reds players was due to leave at 10am.

Wednesday will be the busiest day, with 37 flights taking 8,000 fans.

They will join a predicted 30,000 Reds supporters in Greece.

JLA director Andy Gower said: “We aim to replicate the fantastic carn-ival atmosphere that accompanied the departure of so many fans last time.”
