Athens police will used paintball guns on troublemakers

Police said the 27-year-old was arrested in a sting operation after allegedly taking 7,000 euros from undercover officers for two tickets worth 140 euros each.

Liverpool fan Mark O’Shea from Clubmoor was thrilled after buying two tickets at face value.

He said: “I was at my hotel asking about tickets when this Greek fella pulled me to one side.

“I told him I was desperate and he said I could have them for 80 euros each, which was what he’d paid for them. He told me he bought them in the UEFA ballot to see Man United in the final and he didn’t want to see AC Milan or Liverpool.

“I’m made up because I thought I’d have to pay a fortune.”

Threats of a police strike on the day of the game have been withdrawn, with officers choosing to march to protest about pay and conditions.

There will still be 15,000 on duty tomorrow.

Many Greeks are supporting the Reds in the final.

Konstantinos Chrysochou, from the Athens branch of Liverpool supporters club, said: “Hosting a Champions League final is a major event for us and for Greece in general.

“We do not have the chance to see football finals in our country so often with such big names in them.

“The whole city has been getting ready for this game over the past month.

“Whoever is coming will notice the excitement in the streets of the city.

“There is an incredible atmosphere in Athens and everyone is waiting to celebrate this unique event with the English and the Italians.”

Over the next 48 hours they will be able to celebrate like never before as Liverpool and Milan turn Athens into their temporary home.
