By the left, Kewell can still come into the final reckoning

ALAN KENNEDY is hoping Harry Kewell could be just the player to help Liverpool grab a sixth European Cup on Wednesday night in Athens.

The former full-back turned broadcaster once rampaged down Liverpool’s left flank and proved decisive in big European finals. And now a fit-again Kewell can do something similar against AC Milan.

Kewell has only played twice this season as a second-half substitute in Liverpool’s final two Premiership matches.

And after being forced to limp out of three finals in the last two seasons, the Australian will be desperate for a change of luck in a showpiece event.

Having been injured in the Carling Cup and the Champions League final two years ago, Kewell suffered the indignity of a third in last season’s FA Cup final.

He had not been seen in a red shirt since that day until recently.

And Kennedy is hoping those disappointments can spur him on, if he gets the chance at some stage to test the ageing legs of the AC Milan back four.

Kennedy said: “The guy must be so sick of being injured. We have asked the question, ‘where has Harry Kewell been for the last seven to eight months?’

“But he has had operation, operation and then recuperation and a lot of hard work.

“Harry has come back fitter and better than when we last saw him, which was in the World Cup, but for Liverpool in the FA Cup final.

“I wouldn’t say he has got anything to prove because he has got a lot of ability. But to come off in three finals, he must be hoping that maybe now things are turning for the better.
