By the left, Kewell can still come into the final reckoning

“I’m sure he will have a big part to play in the final. There are several options the manager can take. He can play (John Arne) Riise further forward, he can play (Bolo) Zenden.

“It was interesting against Charlton because Zenden was left-back for part of the game and Riise further forward and on the other side Arbeloa was at full-back and Finnan played ahead of him, so it was quite interesting to see what the manager was trying to do.

“The good thing about it is that you have players who can play in several positions and are comfortable doing it.”

Kennedy was also impressed with Kewell’s calmness and confidence to score the last-minute penalty against Charlton.

And with Liverpool’s history of penalty shoot-outs that sort of ability could be vital.

Kennedy added: “Looking at when Harry Kewell took the penalty against Charlton.

“He had come on, had a good 20 minutes and you could see Steven Gerrard say are you all right? And of course he was all right.

“The goalkeeper got a hand to it, but he had that confidence and that is the most important thing.

“If he gets a chance of playing in Athens he will make the most of it.”
