View from the Stands: Something has to change

BEFORE the game, I said that both teams had a point to prove.

Sadly, it was Spurs who came out of the game with most credit but, luckily, Liverpool managed to rescue a point thanks to Torres.

Point gained, but certainly not made by Liverpool. We started well enough and the goal from Voronin, following up Gerrard’s free-kick, was a good one and something it seemed Liverpool had worked on prior to the game. Liverpool fans taunted Robinson in the Spurs goal with “England’s number one” chants but in truth it was as lacklustre a performance off the field as it was on it. Anfield was quiet for long periods as once again Liverpool made heavy weather of matters.

Spurs are a good side but even when we were one up, they were having the majority of the possession. Even so, the opportunity to finish the game off was there for Liverpool. Gerrard was unlucky to hit the post with an excellent free-kick and then he and two other Liverpool players were queuing up in the box to score and managed to let the opportunity go begging.

Up steps Robbie Keane either side of half-time and suddenly we were 2-1 down but it was hardly unexpected. Spurs pressed home their attacks and if it were not for man-of-the-match Voronin’s timely interception when Gareth Bale outstripped Sami Hyppia it could have been game over. Torres’ late, late rescuer could not disguise there is something not right at the moment and it needs fixing. Fast.
