View From The Stands: United front a must to secure the future for Liverpool

I WONDER what Rafa was thinking on Saturday as Sam Allardyce’s Newcastle were carved open time after time?

The Newcastle fans made it plain enough what they thought of Allardyce. A situation that Benitez could never find himself in at Anfield. As far as Liverpool supporters are concerned, Rafa is numero uno.

Something is still not right at LFC, though. Rafa continued to make his point to Gillett and Hicks in his post-match interviews, claiming that the new owners merely “misunderstood” the transfer market in Europe. I doubt whether this is the case.

The next meeting between Rafa and our new owners is scheduled for after the home game against Manchester United. By then, we’ll also know whether we are through to the Champions League knockout stages and all the extra finance that brings.

George and Tom have problems of their own. A weak American dollar, high steel costs, a squeeze on borrowings, has all made the plans for the new stadium an increasingly expensive option. When they took over, Gillett was at pains to state that “football was the biggest sport in the world, and Liverpool the biggest name”. That still remains the case. Liverpool have achieved that eminence via success on the pitch, particularly in Europe.

That has never come cheap. If our new American owners are to be as good as their word they will need to bite the bullet.

Back Rafa now and ensure the new stadium is built to secure Liverpool’s future.
