Liverpool Reserves 5, Newcastle Reserves 1

LIVERPOOL Reserves will not finish bottom of the Barclays Premier Reserve League Northern Section after ending their season in fine style with an excellent 5-1 victory over Newcastle |United in Warrington last night.

Gary Ablett’s side made it a fine week, the win following on from Monday’s Liverpool Senior Cup final victory over Waterloo Dock.

Ablett named a strong line-up which included Swiss full-back Philipp Degen, continuing his comeback from injury, Nabil El Zhar and David Ngog. He was rewarded with a fine display with goals from Mikel San Jose, Ngog, Damien Plessis and two from substitute Daniel Pacheco.

The win has condemned Bolton Wanderers to bottom spot and after a season of struggles following their title success last year, Liverpool could still end up as high as seventh in the northern section if results in the remaining weeks of the season go their way.

Ngog saw a shot turned behind on 11 minutes, but from the corner San Jose headed in Gerardo Bruna’s delivery.

Ngog fired a low shot in for the second on 18 minutes.

Just before the half-hour it was 3-0 when Plessis got a touch to Bruna’s free-kick.

Pacheco made it 4-0 with a 25-yard free-kick.

Haris Vuckic prodded home after scramble for a consolation for the visitors.

But substiute Pacheco fired in his second after racing through on goal.

LIVERPOOL RESERVES: Bouzanis, Degen (Mendy 70), Darby, San Jose Dominguez, Ayala, Palsson, Plessis, Simon, Bruna, El Zhar (Pacheco 65), Ngog (Saric 80). Subs: Hansen, Weijl.
