Toshack adds to the Anfield connection

John Toshack, former Liverpool FC player, now Welsh football team manager

“But the main thing is that this job will give me the opportunity to have some input into the national team.

“Even though I stopped playing I’ve never stopped wanting Wales to do well and sometimes it’s a bit frustrating being an outsider and not being able to influence things as you would like.

“I think there are a lot of good young talented players coming through and I’m sure I will enjoy working with them and trying to get the best out of them.

“I always loved playing for Wales and I expect every one of them to feel the same way.”

Next month’s match in Bulgaria is a warm-up for the resumption of the 2008 European Championship qualifying campaign, with Wales entertaining Group D favourites Germany on Saturday, September 8 with an away game against Slovakia the following Wednesday.

Toshack is also hoping to build a young squad capable of making an impact in the World Cup qualifying campaign to follow.
