Good but not the best - Liverpool’s record victories in European competition

LIVERPOOL’S 8-0 thrashing of Besiktas at Anfield last night set a new Champions League record but is only joint fourth on their list of biggest European wins.

These are the Reds’ top five wins in Europe, all of which came on Merseyside:

Liverpool 11 Stromgodset 0 – European Cup Winners’ Cup, September 17 1974. Scorers: Lindsay, Boersma (two), Thompson (two), Heighway, Cormack, Hughes, Smith, Callaghan, R Kennedy.

Liverpool 10 Dundalk 0 – European Fairs Cup, September 16 1969. Scorers: Evans (two), Lawler, Smith (two), Graham (two), Lindsay, Thompson, Callaghan.

Liverpool 10 Oulu Palloseura 1 – European Cup, October 1 1980. Scorers: Souness (three), McDermott (three), Lee, R Kennedy, Fairclough (two).

Liverpool 8 TSV Munich 0 – European Fairs Cup, November 7 1967. Scorers: St John, Hateley, Smith, Hunt (two), Thompson, Callaghan (two).

Liverpool 8 Besiktas 0 – Champions League, November 6 2007. Scorers: Crouch (two), Benayoun (three), Gerrard, Babel (two).
