YOSSI BENAYOUN insisted their record- breaking 8-0 Champions League victory would provide the necessary confidence boost for the side to go on and qualify for the knock- out stages.
The Israel international scored a hat-trick and said: "It is a special night for everyone. I am happy to score but what was important was the way we won.
"We just need to continue to improve all the time. We knew we had our backs to the wall because we had to win three games.
"I’m sure this win will give us a lot of confidence."
Crouch was asked if he remembered the last time he had played in an 8-0 victory. "Schoolboy days," was his response. "Everything just clicked tonight."
The England striker has found himself marginalised somewhat at Anfield this season but he refused to see his two-goal performance as proving a point.
"I would rather just enjoy tonight. I have played 90 minutes and we’ve won 8-0. I couldn’t be more happy.
"Although it is a big win it is only three points. We need to win the other games and make sure we can qualify."
Benitez’s side have been criticised for failing to take their chances over the last few weeks but he felt this performance showed there was not much wrong with the way they were playing.
"You can see the team has enough power for scoring goals," the Spaniard told ITV1.
"I think today was more about team work than about players. I think all the players played well but they always need to score the first goal and open the game.
"We are creating chances, we just need a bit of luck. We knew we needed to win the last three games.
"We will try to win in Porto and see what happens in the last one."
