Liverpool’s goal-scoring hero Steven Gerrard insisted he was not worried about fans’ abuse after starring in his side’s 3-0 win at hapless Newcastle.
Gerrard, who was continually booed for his part in England’s Euro 2008 debacle, opened the scoring with a first-half thunderbolt before Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel scored further goals as Rafael Benitez’s men ran amok.
Asked if he had expected to be abused by supporters, Gerrard told Sky Sports 1: “Of course.
“All the other England lads have got to take the criticism.
“From now until we (England) get it right we are going to take a lot of criticism.”
Of the game, he added: “It was quite competitive, we started the game really brightly and controlled for 90 minutes.
“We could have had a lot more.”
Of Liverpool’s title chances, Gerrard said: “If people want to write us off it’s up to them.
“We’ve got to keep winning and stay really consistent to stay in it, especially over Christmas.”
