Rafa Benitez petition backed by thousands

AN ONLINE petition calling on Rafael Benitez to stay as Liverpool FC manager was last night heading for 22,500 signatures.

The petition was launched on Sunday after a flurry of reports that the manager was about to be sacked after a falling-out with the LFC’s new American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Meanwhile, a demonstration in support of Benitez is due to take place before the start of Liverpool’s crunch Champions League match against Porto at Anfield tonight.

The protest starts at 6.30pm outside the Sandon pub in Oakfield Road, while fans are being urged to chant and wave banners in support of Benitez during the game itself.

The online petition, organised by the This is Anfield website, is addressed directly to Hicks and Gillett.

It calls on the American owners to recognise the importance of Benitez to the club.
