Rafa Benitez insists he will not blame his turbulent relationship with Liverpool’s owners for the collapsed title challenge, but he admits it would be ‘the perfect excuse’.
Benitez had a public falling out with co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, after the American duo failed to back the Spaniard’s efforts to tie up crucial signings.
The fall-out occurred at a time when Liverpool were flying in the league, yet their Champions League form left much to be desired – prompting the co-owners to sound out Jurgen Klinsmann.
"What is evident is that back at that time we were in a great position and the team was in shape to win many of the games which we eventually drew," he told the News of the World.
"So the entire process is what allowed the gap to open between us and the leaders.
"If I wanted, I have the perfect excuse. The only solution I have is to try to bury myself in my work."
