NOT a classic as is the norm in this fixture, but a game that Liverpool dominated, and they can count themselves unlucky not to come away with threee points.
The major frustration is with Fernando Torres in the side we probably would have won.
However, if offered a draw at Stamford Bridge at the start of the season very few fans would have turned it down.
One of the most positive points was the display of Martin Skrtel who was a tower of strength. In his first real challenge since joining, the Slovakian impressed greatly. With Daniel Agger injured, the arrival of Skrtel has been a massive lift for Rafa Benitez. To contain a team of Chelsea’s ability is a massive accolade and Pepe Reina again had a quiet day’s work.
I was also delighted to see Ryan Babel start and although he had a mixed performance it is imperative he gets the experience of playing against the top teams in preparation for, hopefully, a massive season next time out. As ever though, goal-scoring is the big problem and it must be so frustrating for the likes of Skrtel and Jamie Carragher that despite all their efforts we can’t turn it on at the opposite end of the pitch.
But, we need to think of the bigger picture and with two home cup ties coming up, it proves there is still so much to play for. And a look at the league fixture list shows we have got a great chance to pick up points in the coming games.
But until the attacking resources are improved, the key to success or failure will be the great Torres – a club awaits.
