Reffing hell: Why Steve Bennett is no football hero

IN case anyone missed it, the Steve Bennett who is currently being held up as the defender of English football is the very same Steve Bennett who sent Xabi Alonso off at Highbury a couple of years ago for no more than toppling over and falling into Arsenal’s Mathieu Flamini.

The FA gave Bennett the chance to reverse his decision after viewing video evidence, only for the Kent school teacher to stand his ground.

It is also the same Steve Bennett who gave handball against Luke Young at Villa Park recently when the ball clearly struck the Middlesbrough defender in the back.

And the very same Steve Bennett who was in charge of Everton’s game at St James’ Park last season when Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi scored perhaps the most offside goal in the history of the game.

Is it any wonder Javier Mascherano was so keen to ask the official at Old Trafford what’s going on?
