Mascherano hit with ban and £15,000 fine

JAVIER MASCHERANO has today been hit with an additional two-match ban and a fine of £15,000 following his acrimonious sending off in last month’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

The midfielder, who admitted an FA charge of improper conduct after strongly contesting his red card with referee Steve Bennett, could now miss Saturday’s clash with Arsenal and the following league game against Blackburn Rovers.

Liverpool, however, are considering an appeal and have 24 hours in which to do so.

The punishment is in contrast to the one dished out to Emmanuel Adebayor for similar behaviour in last season’s Carling Cup final.

After remonstrating his sending off, the Arsenal striker was later handed a one-match ban and a fine of £7,500 – half that of Mascherano’s.
