LIVERPOOL Reserves continued their excellent form with a 2-1 FA Barclays Premier Reserve League Northern Section win over Manchester City at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground last night.
A first-half brace from Jordy Brouwer was enough to give the newly-crowned FA Premier Reserve League North champions took their 12th victory of what has been a hugely successful campaign and ensured they will head into their final league game of the season at home to Wigan Athletic having smashed through the 40-point barrier.
It took just 12 minutes for Gary Ablett’s side to take the lead with Brouwer finishing neatly following good set up play from Krisztian Nemeth and Ryan Flynn.
It set the tone for the remainder of the first-half and Nemeth was once again Liverpool's protagonist, showing glimpses of his class as he fired a warning shot over the crossbar on 26 minutes.
Few sides have been able to cope with the Hungarian forward this season and it proved to be the case again last night as his vision and ability on the ball singled him out.
Argentinian starlet Gerado Bruna clipped the bar with fine 30-yard free-kick, before Brouwer added a second with a well placed shot after a lovely back-heel from Nemeth had put him clear.
City came back into the game after the break, as Liverpool’s passing became sloppy. Liverpool’s back-line have been virtually impregnable of late however, and keeper Peter Gulacsi had little to do until the late introduction of Valery Bojinov.
The Bulgarian almost scored with his first touch, a shot from 18 yards that went just wide. He had better luck 10 minutes from time when he got the faintest of touches to a ball in by Clayton, and the ball rolled past Gulacsi. It was the first goal Liverpool has conceded in almost nine games.
Flynn squandered two glorious chances to increase Liverpool’s lead, and the game ended on sour note for Liverpool, who ended the game with 10 men after a serious injury to substitute Ryan Crowther saw him stretchered off with a suspected broken leg.
