Anfield falls silent to remember Hillsborough victims

Liverpool FC remembers the victims of the Hillsborough disaster

FANS fell silent for a minute before Liverpool's Premier League tie with Blackburn to mark the 19th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

The minute’s silence fell across Anfield at just before 1.30pm as supporters paid their respects to the 96 people who died on April 15, 1989, in Sheffield. They unfurled banners pitchside commemorating their “96 Brothers”.

The crush in the build up to an FA cup semi-final between Liverpool FC and Nottingham Forest FC was the result of a failure of police control, according to the Taylor Report which investigated the tragedy.

That game was abandoned six minutes into the first half.

In the aftermath of the deaths football stadiums across the United Kingdom were converted to all-seater facilities and barriers at the front of stands have been removed.

The Hillsborough Family Support Group are organising their traditional memorial service to mark the occasion on Tuesday.

The service will be inter-denominational and will take place on the Anfield Kop at 2.45pm.

A further minute’s silence will be held at exactly 3.06pm and the service will conclude at about 3.30pm with the singing of You'll Never Walk Alone.

Families will light 96 candles to remember each individual life that was lost.
