Liverpool FC remembers the victims of the Hillsborough disaster
FANS held a respectful minute’s silence before Liverpool’s 3-1 Premiership victory over Blackburn Rovers yesterday to mark the 19th anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster.
Silence fell across Anfield at just before 1.30pm, as supporters paid their respects to the 96 people who died on April 15, 1989, in Sheffield, and unfurled ban- ners commemorating their “96 Brothers”.
The crush in the build-up to an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest was the result of a failure of police control, according to the Taylor Report which investigated the tragedy.
In the aftermath of the deaths, football grounds across the Britain have been converted to all-seater, and barriers at the front of stands have been removed.
Hillsborough Family Support Group members are organising their traditional memorial service to mark the occasion tomorrow.
The service on the Anfield Kop at 2.45pm will be inter-denominational. A further min- ute’s silence will be held at exactly 3.06pm, and the service will conclude at about 3.30pm with the singing of You'll Never Walk Alone. Families will light 96 candles.
