LIVERPOOL FC may be filling their squad with Spaniards but according to Nike the entire city is turning Iberian.
Paella dish sellers shout their wares in the squares, Bold Street’s printing shop is doing a roaring trade in Nunca Caminaras Solo (you’ll never walk alone) T-shirts and the terraces of Toxteth are being transformed into giant Spanish flags.
It’s all part of a new Nike advert celebrating Fernando Torres’ blistering first season in the Premiership, and in anticipation of a European Championships with not a single home team.
In Nike’s adverts, the Mersey ferry flies the Spanish flag, red lines are painted between the yellow on the city’s roads and office windows drape the Iberian insignia to show their allegiance.
But in a nod to the speed of Torres adaptation to his new country, it ends with the 33-goal man strolling through the park, his dog by his side, just like the perfect English gent.
