FERNANDO TORRES has revealed his desperation to play a part in Liverpool’s three-way assault for honours in 2009.
The Spaniard kicked off the new year by marking his return to the side with the clinching goal in Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup third round victory at Preston North End.
He was only on the field for 15 minutes as he came on as a substitute following almost six weeks out with a hamstring injury and scored his first goal for three months.
But while Liverpool have made progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League and extended their lead at the top of the Premier league to three points, Torres has spent a frustrating spell on the sidelines.
Last season’s 33-goal top scorer has only played 17 times this season due to his recurring hamstring problems and he hasn’t even scored at Anfield yet.
But he is determined to help his team-mates build on the good work they have done in his absence.
“Always it is frustrating when you are not playing and missing games,” said Torres.
“You want to be out there helping your team-mates and working hard, but the injury is in the past now.
“I have forgotten about it and I am only looking forward.
“I hope all my hamstring injuries are over and that I can keep playing and scoring for Liverpool. The team has shown they can win without Stevie and without me. That is very important. It shows that we play as a team.
“They have done very well and deserve a lot of credit but I want to try and play my part too.
“I came to Liverpool to win trophies and I hope this can be the year we can do that,” he added.
