Daniel Agger set for surgery as Glen Johnson has ‘perfect debut’ - Liverpool FC latest

DANIEL AGGER’S hopes of a swift comeback for Liverpool have received a blow with the defender set to undergo surgery in an attempt to cure his ongoing back complaint.

The Danish defender could face at least six weeks on the sidelines as he recovers from the operation.

Agger has been troubled by a back problem throughout the summer and sat out Liverpool’s opening two games of the season.

Rafael Benitez stated earlier this week that Agger would be out for the next three weeks, but the decision has now been taken for the 24-year-old to go under the knife in France next Tuesday.

Agger has suffered a succession of injury problems since arriving at Anfield in January 2006, and has started only 23 games in the last two years.

Liverpool are already struggling for senior options at centre-back, with Martin Skrtel currently out with a jaw injury.

It prompted Benitez to step up his search for cover and Greece international Sotirios Kyrgiakos will complete a move from AEK Athens once the 30-year-old passes his medical.

Meanwhile, Glen Johnson admitted he enjoyed “the perfect night” after a goalscoring home debut for Liverpool – then set his sights on a lengthy unbeaten run.

The £17million right-back netted a spectacular overhead kick and had a hand in two other goals as Rafael Benitez’s side eased to a 4-0 win over Stoke City on Wednesday.
