Anfield says goodbye to two old favourites

TWO sad farewells this week: Stephen Warnock, transferred to Blackburn and, more sombrely, 63-year old Lenny Campbell, the self-styled ‘Dr Fun’ of the Kop.

I’ve always admired Warnock, coming back as he did from several serious injuries to claim a place in the first team squad, following a spell at Coventry where he was voted player of the season.

It’s always good to see a local lad break through and his commitment and solid tackling was a credit to him, never shirking a hard tackle despite his injury record.

Sadly, his tendency to pick up regular injuries counted against him in the end, as it did for Chris Kirkland.

The sad death of Lenny is another sign of the passing of time, a small piece of the Kop legend slipping away. I well remember bumping into Lenny both outside the Kop and at away games, his red top hat and coat festooned with badges and Liverpool insignia and memorabilia.

* FOLLOWING my rant last week about assistant referees delaying raising their flag until a player in an offside position actually receives the ball, it appears that Uriah Rennie has decided to dispense with the offside law altogether.

His decision that Scott Parker was not interfering with an opponent when stepping over the ball in front of the keeper defied belief.

No doubt we can now expect Sam Allardyce to recruit the Tiller Girls to form a dancing wall in front of the keeper at free-kicks.

Distracting? I think not.
