FREEBIES and competitions across Merseyside are on offer today to mark the 20/08 celebrations in the run-up to Capital of Culture year.

Many Merseyside attractions will be free of charge to celebrate Liverpool’s winning bid and mark 20/08 day.

More than 130 offers will be up for grabs, giving Liverpudlians the chance to experience many attractions they may have never considered.

With free entry to the British Lawnmower Museum, free tickets to an Everton match, and free entry for children at Chester Zoo, there is something for everyone.

Culture Company spokeswoman Lauren Hayward said: “There are tons of things going on so there is definitely something for everyone. If you have a family and want to entertain the kids you can go to Sefton Park and join the festivit-ies. Or, if you want to go out for a nice meal, you can go to the Blue Bar and Grill at the Albert Dock, which is offering 50% off food.”

Sefton Park is having a Victorian-themed family day with a Victorian fancy dress competition, a Punch and Judy show, a circus corner and traditional punch.

Chester Zoo is free for children, while the British Lawnmower Museum in Southport and the National Wildflower Centre in Huyton will be free for all ages.

The Beatles Museum is joining in the festivities by offering discounts to all visitors. In addition, they are having a “Fab Four” taxi tour which will take Beatles’ fans around Liverpool to iconic places such as Penny Lane, and will be free for a limited number of people.

Special prizes can also be won as part of the celebration.

Cavern City Tours are offering an advance copy of their special 50th birthday album to one winner and Everton fans can enter to win a package for four people including a meal and tickets to an Everton Premiership match. Ms Haywood said: “It should be even more successful than last year because we have so many fantastic offers.

“It will get the ball rolling on 2008 and pick up the atmosphere around Liverpool. It gives everyone a chance to celebrate the Capital of Culture.”

Jason Harborow, Chief Executive of the Liverpool Culture Company, added: “20/08 day is an opportunity to showcase Liverpool’s fantastic cultural assets.

“There are so many things to see and do in the city – 20/08 is a chance to find out exactly why we won Capital of Culture in the first place.”
