Liverpool duo’s charity auction visit proves the icing on the cake

Culture cake

INTERNATIONAL football stars Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard turned out to the unveiling of a cake yesterday – only to find themselves on it.

The stars’ faces were depicted in fruit cake and icing by designer David MacCarfraeon a massive Capital of Culture cake to be auctioned on Ebay for charity.

David, of David’s Cakes of Distinction, Crosby, spent more than 500 hours creating the masterpiece, which also has the faces of Mikel Arteta and Andy Johnson of Everton.

As the cake was shown to those gathered, including the Lord Mayor, Cllr Paul Clark, Steven said: “Wow, look at that, it is amazing.”

The midfielder was less impressed by the size of his nose in David’s creation and wasn't put at ease when his team mate said he couldn't see a difference between the cake and reality.

Jamie was stunned to hear it took 500 hours to make the cake. Proceeds of the auction will go to Liverpool-based charity Give a Child a Chance.

David said: “I wanted to create a cake for Liverpool for this magnificent year. I am hoping that Liverpool will unite and enjoy themselves. I was originally going to create a cake with a giant cup but I wanted to express the unity of Liverpool by putting members of each team holding either side of the cup.

“The cake has gone on auction today and will remain on there for three months. We will be taking it to the Everton training ground for the players to sign it, too.

“I am hoping we will make a fair bit of money for the charity.”
