Nationwide campaign to start children using libraries

A BID to boost library membership was launched on Merseyside yesterday by Only Fools and Horses star Paul Barber.

Mr Barber, who grew up in Liverpool, greeted schoolchildren in the Central Library to launch the National Library Campaign.

The scheme hopes to recruit 350,000 new members this year and is part of the 2008 National Year of Reading.

The actor, best known as Denzil in the Peckham-based sitcom, and who also starred in The Full Monty, said: “It’s really important for children to read books, magazines, or anything really, and the library doesn’t cost them anything.”

During the campaign, the first 235,000 new library members nationwide will receive a welcome pack illustrating more than 200 recommended books for children.
