Mural is a recycled vision of the universe
THE Novas Contemporary Urban Centre, on Greenland Street, is one of the real hubs of the Independent Biennial, holding a variety of exhibitions during the festival.
And its intentions are stated before visitors even get through the doors, in the shape of an outdoor mural by its artists-in-residence Carl Fletcher and Ken Bullock.
Their Visions of the Cosmos will remain on the side of the warehouse opposite Novas until plans to redevelop the site go ahead.
The pair work on their own individual art in their studio there, but also work together on art and decorative jobs at Novas, including designing and painting the set of 30 Days in Walton, which will be the first play to be staged in the theatre later in the month.
Their work is also now on display as part of an exhibition at one of the charity’s sister centres, in Southwark.
The mural was made from recycled materials and leftover paints, and so cost less than £30, they say.
“The universe is something that is too big for man to get his fingers into, it makes us realise we are only little, we are stardust.
“In the grand scheme of things, we’re not a big deal, and that’s humbling,” says Ken.
