Is this the way to Liverpool? Tony Christie joins ferry cross the Mersey

TONY CHRISTIE was in Liverpool yesterday to launch the BBC Electric Proms.

The 65-year-old singer , who returned to fame four years ago when Peter Kay used (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, performed on the Mersey Ferry.

Mr Christie said: “The BBC rang and said ‘Would you like to play the Electric Proms?’

“Well, I jumped at the chance.

“Then they said that this year’s Electric Proms is in Liverpool, and would I play on the ferry? I’ve played boats before – I’ve played on the QE2 – but I’ve never played on a little ferry, so I thought why not? It’ll be an experience.”

He showcased tracks from his new album, Made In Sheffield, produced by lifelong fans Richard Hawley and Colin Elliot.

Mr Christie said the Sheffield music scene is similar to Liverpool. “There are a lot of parallels. Liver-pool always had its sound. We’ve always had ours.”
