Legend Gerry marks Cavern’s 50th birthday with 200th club appearance

Gerry Marsden

THE Cavern Club in Mathew Street hosted a VIP party last night to celebrate the launch of a CD marking its 50th anniversary.

Merseybeat legend Gerry Marsden made his 200th appear-ance at the club to perform three of his most fam-ous numbers – I Like It, Ferry Cross the Mersey, and Liverpool FC anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Along with the Beatles, Gerry and the Pace-makers were stalwarts of the famous lunch-time live music sessions held at the Cavern in the early 60s.

Before taking to the stage last night, Marsden said: “I still get the same great adrenaline rush I always got from appearing at the Cavern.

“Brian Epstein gave us the opportunity to do the sessions in October 1960, and it’s still got the same great atmosphere.”

Local music expert Spencer Leigh also held a question and answer session with a number of leading figures on their memories of the Cavern, including Denny Laine, a former member of Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles group Wings.
