ACOUSTIC Triangle’s 3 Dimensions is a major new work composed specifically for performance in some of England’s most awe- inspiring spaces.
The contemporary classical outfit come to Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral on Friday for a one-off show.
The acclaimed trio, joined by six world- class string players, the Sacconi Strings, have been touring cathedrals and abbeys across the country "in a joyful celebration of sound and magnificent architecture".
Award-winning composers Tim Garland and Gwilym Simcock have written new works which are individually "choreographed" for each building in order to create a series of unique performances.
The nine players will be placed all around the audience, even above, creating an acoustic three- dimensional soundscape that allows the music to surprise, echo and develop in extraordinary ways.
The trio’s material reflects their classical backgrounds as well as their careers in the jazz world. Garland, Simcock and band leader Malcolm Creese are all highly acclaimed in their own right, having worked with everyone from Cleo Laine and John Dankworth to the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Founded on a love of modern classical music, improvisation, and a passion for natural, un-amplified sound, Acoustic Triangle successfully bridges the boundaries between the genres.
Malcolm explains: "You can’t play just any music. When people are playing far away from each other, there are time delays, echoes, it can be an absolute nightmare.
"So the music has been composed especially for this great big echoey place.
"The big challenge is to find ways of making it work.
"We quickly realised what’s good in one cathedral is hopeless in another.
"You need to consider the building at every stage to make it really successful."
