SEX and the City designer Patricia Field's new collection caused a storm when it arrived at Liverpool's Marks & Spencer store yesterday.

Shoppers were queuing outside the Church Street shop from before 8am to buy pieces from the collection, which includes outfits based on those worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the box office hit.

Many items, including a teal silk dress and graffiti clutch, had sold out by lunchtime and some had been placed on auction site eBay for more than double their original price.

Catherine Harvey, visual manager at the Liverpool store, said last night: "We’ve had a brilliant day and the customers have really loved the collection.

"Liverpool customers are definitely some of the most fashion conscious in the country so this range was perfect for our city, as demonstrated in some of our most popular pieces, for example the iconic corsage dress, the teal dress with floaty sleeves and the grafitti print clutch bag ."

Patricia Field is one of today’s most recognised and globally influential fashion designers and stylists with two Emmys and an Academy Award nomination for her work on 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

The New Yorker is best known for her costume design for cult TV show and movie Sex and the City.

Liverpool-born actress Kim Cattrall, who plays Samantha in the series, recently said: "There is no-one like Patricia Field, she creates trends all by herself."

The 35-piece collection is exclusive to Marks & Spencer and will not be restocked once sold out.
