Guitarist who will only work on truly original music
LIVERPOOL guitarist Neil Campbell is heralding the release of his latest album, Ghost Stories.
A collaboration with electronic musician Michael Beiert and singer Anne Taft, the trio are all colleagues at Hope University.
“The main thing for us is the atmosphere, it should be a very immersive experience,” says Campbell.
“Ghost Stories is more a romantic idea rather than anything supernatural, about remembering things, like a fleeting relationship.
“Michael has created a soundscape out of the whispers of Anne’s voice that runs underneath the music.
“The project comes out of maybe contemporary classical music like Brian Eno and Philip Glass – although it’s not hardcore avant-garde, it’s very melodic.
“It’s music coming out of the night and the idea it makes for a contemplative atmosphere.
“I try not to do music too alike to anything else really. I enjoy lots of different music but I think it is important to find your own take on things.”
Among many projects, he is currently working on a project with one of his musical heroes, John Anderson of Yes.
Campbell has been playing guitar since the age of seven and holds an MA in composition.
He hopes to present the music from the album in a series of concerts and multimedia events, varying from performance to performance
Ghost Stories was launched with a special atmospheric concert at St Bride’s Church on Halloween.
