Liverpool’s Victoria Gallery and Museum to hold exhibition of work by Beatles photographer Astrid Kirschner
A RETROSPECTIVE of Beatles photographer Astrid Kirchherr is one of the new exhibitions planned for Liverpool’s Victoria Gallery and Museum.
The Hamburg-based artist formed a link with the Brownlow Hill venue after visiting its exhibition of paintings by Stuart Sutcliffe last year.
Kirchherr was the Fifth Beatle’s fiancée at the time of his death when he was studying at the German city’s school of art.
Although she is best known for her images of the band’s Hamburg stint, the show, in autumn, 2010, will include pictures from before she met Sutcliffe and those taken later.
Next year will also see the VG&M’s first exhibition of art works loaned by an outside collection.
Focusing on Chinese calligraphy of the past 50 years, the show will feature pieces borrowed from the British Museum and will coincide with Liverpool exhibiting at the World EXPO in Shanghai.
There have been around 65,000 visits made to the VG&M since it opened a year ago this week in the University of Liverpool’s converted Victoria Building.
“It has been a very exciting and busy 12 months. We have opened the final exhibition space – the decorative arts gallery – and have also launched an educational outreach programme aimed at schools, adult learners and families across the Liverpool city region,” says Matthew Clough, director of art and heritage collections.
