A nip and tuck is all it takes

More of us than ever are going under the knife to fix our faces and figures. Emma Johnson reports

"We have definitely seen an increase in the number of people asking for liposuction," says Medispa's managing director Mary Burney, who emphasises that it is not a treatment for obesity. "We are also seeing more men asking for liposuction, particularly for things like ‘man breasts'."

Mary puts the general increase in people going under the knife down to a number of factors, including safety, acceptability and affordability.

She says: "In general, cosmetic surgery has become much more acceptable and popular, so much so that we are opening more clinics in response to demand (a Medispa clinic will open in Liverpool next month). It is safer than it was and anaesthetic procedures are better.

"It is always in the press so people are more aware of it, and people have more disposable income these days. So, if you are fit and healthy and can afford it, why not?"
