I'm loved up at the moment

Emma Johnson meets the former Atomic Kitten singer hoping to make an impact at Eurovision

Liverpool singer Liz McLarnon, formerly of pop band Atomic Kitten

LAST time the UK put forward a Liverpool entry for Eurovision, it ended in disaster. But it is hard to imagine the dreaded null points fate, which Jemini suffered, befalling the lovely Liz McClarnon, should she succeed in becoming our ambassador for this year's competition.

The former Atomic Kitten star, currently forging a solo career, will be fighting to do just that this Saturday in the BBC's Eurovision Making Your Mind Up 2007 show.

Liz, 25, faces competition from five other acts, including former Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins, Big Brovaz and ex-East 17 star Brian Harvey, all hoping to win the public vote and jet off to Helsinki for the contest in May.

It means even more to Liz because her song (Don't It Make You) Happy, which she co-wrote, is all about how crazy she is about her new beau, Swansea striker Lee Trundle.

"I wrote it at Christmas," she reveals, "on a miserable day in London. It is all about new love and being happy in new love."

She met the Huyton-born player last summer, here in Liverpool, and the pair have been one of football's hottest couples, with Liz splitting her time between the home which they have just bought in Swansea and her own Liverpool pad.

"I am loved up at the moment," she laughs.

Although Liz admits she had been asked a number of times to do Eurovision, this was the first time she felt it was right to do it and she is not at all put off by the contest's - how shall we put it? - "cheesey" reputation.

"I felt like I had the right song, and the BBC were saying what a big contest they are going to make it this time," she gushes at the end of a long day of interviews. "Happy is a huge, upbeat song from the heart which I think will give everyone a lift when they hear it. I really wanted to release this song as my second single from my album, which is out at the end of May, so it is a great opportunity.
