Out of the closet

Jane Gallagher discovers our wardrobes are home to clothes for different occasions and in various sizes, while some are hidden away and forgotten about

“I know that it is pointless to wear clothes that don’t fit but we do hang on to things long after I should have thrown them out. I was once a size eight and am now a size 16. I am perfectly happy with my shape and I dress well to flatter it but I still can’t bear to throw out those smaller clothes.”

But for photographer Sandra Carney, of Yaffe Fusion Art in Southport, her wardrobe is all about colour.

“I guess with me it’s perhaps more about colour than sizes. On fat days, lots of black and on thinner days more prints and brighter colours.

“I would have said I wore everything in my wardrobe all the time but I did find a pair of black trousers I had forgotten about.

“Clothes are very important to the way I feel and I definitely have certain clothes that make me feel good. I work in a very image conscious business so I think clothes have to also reflect the image you want to project.”

Kathryn Bootman, 23, right, a PR manager at Liverpool firm Kenyon Fraser, agrees.

“My problem is that I have just returned from a year travelling in Australia and I’d say my style is a bit up the wall,” says Kathryn, of Woolton.

“However, I would agree that there are more than a few pairs of jeans in my wardrobe that can only be worn after a gym frenzy.

“I definitely agree that a woman’s wardrobe is divided into some kind of order, I think it just depends on the woman and her lifestyle.

“Some mornings you wake up and feel like you want to cover up, so pull out something that you know is going to hide your lumps and bumps, and other days you may be feeling better about yourself so wear something a bit more revealing or different.
