Apartment was love at first sight

Debbie Johnson visits a home at the heart of Liverpool’s nightlife

Helen also works in her spare time as a model, using the stunning good looks that she inherited from her parents, who moved to the UK decades ago from Guyana, in South America.

She says: “I have been modelling since I was 16 when I won a competition. It was not a job I wanted to do full-time, it’s more of a hobby, but I really enjoy it – getting pampered and made to look beautiful, as well as the extra cash.”

Helen’s flat in the Tea Factory became home after she graduated from Liverpool University with a degree in law and criminology – which she says she chose because she is both “scared and fascinated” by crime and the criminal mind.

She moved in just over a year ago, and has been making it as fluffy and girlie as she can.

Her bedroom is large and spacious, with French doors leading out on to a balcony overlooking Wood Street.

The room is painted red, with large, matching gilt-framed mirrors. The walls are also covered in photo collages of friends and family. To counteract the busyness of the decor, she keeps the soft furnishings plain and simple, with cream embroidered sheets and cream carpets.

The room has an en-suite shower room, which has pink shower curtains and accessories: “That is pure Helen – I do love a bit of pink, there are loads of fluffy teddies and rabbits and frames in the place.”

Helen also loves travelling, and has family in Australia and America who she visits. Her boyfriend, Matthew, a design consultant, is also taking her away on a mystery holiday soon.

She says: “I love travelling around and seeing different places and cultures. But, for the moment, home is definitely Liverpool – I just can’t imagine anywhere better to live just now.”
