WE ALL get our fair share of bad hair days, when no matter how hard you try that kink just won’t iron out or that curl just won’t tumble.
But it seems ever getting a good hair day, once you get to 50, is something of a struggle for many women. A recent study commissioned by Dove ProAge, into the hair care habits of mature British women, revealed that over a quarter of them lack confidence to update their look with a new style, and a third admitted to having had the same hairstyle for more than 10 years.
Hating their hairstyles also has a big impact on the confidence of older women, with nearly half of women over 50 saying that they have become more insecure about their hair as they’ve aged.
Fortunately, for ladies lacking confidence with their looks, Dove Hair has teamed up with celebrity hairdresser Anthony Yacomine for some inspiration.
"Women are very sensitive about their age, but you can maintain a hairstyle that carries you gracefully into your mature years," says Antony.
"In my experience, the majority of ladies that come to my salon want to look good, not younger and by updating your hair style you can do this."
Women over the age of 50 say they are influenced by the opinions of others when it comes to modernising their hair style with 45% saying they would go ahead with a new style if their hairdresser advised them while a quarter turn to magazines for inspiration.
To help mature ladies keep their hair in tip top condition that will continue looking luscious, Anthony has these tips:
Make sure the hair cut you have is the right one for you and that it is working with the changes that are taking place as your hair begins to turn grey;
Choosing the right products is essential to help control your hair as more grey appears;
Conditioning is essential as you get older, in order to keep the hair soft. This will make styling quicker and help to keep your style for longer;
A healthy diet, consisting of plenty of fruit and vegetables as well as lots of water, is a must for keeping hair hydrated and healthy in its appearance;
Grey hair will not always appear in a uniform way. It may start to appear in patches, giving the dreaded "salt and pepper" effect. This can be easily dealt with by using hair colour to naturalise the look;
Accept and embrace the changes that are happening, if they’re happening to you, they will be happening to everyone else too! Work with this. Now may be the time to re-invent your look by changing your hairstyle or using colour.
