A balance between macho and mellow

Laura Davis offers some ideas to help men cope with that crucial image issue

APPARENTLY, it’s tough being a man in the modern world. They’re expected to shed an occasional tear during a weepy movie, but still have to be on hand to change the tyre when you drive over a nail.

The one place where it’s easy to balance their feminine sides with a hint of macho toughness is in fashion.

The urban action man look combines soft fabrics such as cashmere sweaters or fleecy hooded tops with more durable denim and leather.

Greys, whites, blacks and just a hint of muted colour make up the palette.
