Lose weight, feel great

Is all that festive bingeing weighing heavy on you? Emma Johnson has tips on how to beat the Christmas bulge

Personal trainer Emma Robertson

WITH a Christmas dinner of turkey and all the trimmings, not to mention pudding and a couple of glasses of wine, potentially adding up to a whopping 1,306 calories, is it any wonder we can feel a few pounds heavier after the festive season?

Add to that all the boozy nights out, the tins of biscuits, boxes of chocolates and the seemingly never-ending supply of mince pies, and it is not unusual to see that muffin top creeping over your waistband.

“As a trainer, I am bombarded by questions this time of year, the most common being ‘How can I get rid of the Christmas bulge?’,” says Emma Robertson, pictured, a personal trainer and holistic lifestyle coach based at Greens Health and Fitness, in Liverpool.

“I have found the most effective way to achieve this is to control your blood sugar levels. The quantity and rate at which sugar enters the blood determines the amount of insulin (the hormone of energy uptake and storage) produced by the body throughout the day. Excess insulin production is directly linked to fat deposits around the waist and abdomen.”

Before you go embarking on a drastic diet you will ditch by the weekend, here are Emma’s more sensible and achievable top tips for shifting the extra pounds.
