If we dressed for a British summer, we’d all be permanently in wellies and oilskins. Laura Davis has some bright ideas to defy the downpours

WELL, here we are in the middle of the great British summer and, like the little girl with the curl on her forehead, when it’s good it’s very, very good and when it’s bad it’s horrid.

If you’re going to a festival, it makes no difference if there’s rain or shine because you’re stuck out there in the middle of a field with nowhere to run.

So, unless you’re planning to dress in cagoule and sou’wester, you may as well embrace the possibility of blazing sunshine and go for little shorts, floaty maxi dresses and vest tops.

Designed in 1867 by French landscape architect Edouard Andre, with sweeping pathways, a boating lake and copses of trees, it looks more like a natural landscape than a man-made park.
