Style: The mane attraction

Phil Gallagher, Voodou's art director

And he says international hairdressing is not always as straightforward a task as you might think.

“You have to mould what you do to the country you are visiting.

“You have one plan in your head and then go to India where everyone’s got long hair and it isn’t feasible any more.”

Life at Voodou is certainly calmer, but Phil also has high aspirations for the award- winning Liverpool company, which owns four salons including two in the city centre – on Bold Street and Stanley Street.

“It’s a lot different.

“If you’re doing a model’s hair on stage, then it can be really out there, but a lot of our clients here are students who are great because they’re more experimental.

“The client’s really important when you are doing hair because if you are working on a show then you may never see the same model again but in the salon you get the satisfaction of the client telling you that they like what you’ve done for them – or if they don’t,” says Phil, whose wife, Erica, 28, is from Liverpool.

“The plan for the future is to build a stronger artistic side for Voodou and to build more of a profile in the industry for our creativity.”
